Caldera

Caldera was the first solo exhibition in my home gallery, featuring the work by artist Linda Linko. Below is a text about the exhibition by the artist.
“This is my first solo exhibition consisting only of paintings, which is funny because I've been painting almost my whole life. Maybe there has been too much other fuss. Maybe I haven't been ready as an artist. Maybe I haven't wanted to reveal my innermost self. The paintings have been created within the last couple of years. On the other hand, there are also a few older works whose time has come now.
The paintings are both abstract and representational, but both are united by the need to capture something human. Sensitivity. Beneath the colorful and soft lines is a bittersweet feeling: the compulsion to move forward when you just want to be, to stay put even if you're burning inside. It is often these kinds of experiences that leave the strongest impression. I believe in the power of silent signals.
I often describe my process as a snowball: a cotton candy cloud where the movement is darting in many different directions. I always return to the center from time to time. I continue with old themes even after years, and the idea of the whole often remains open. Very few things in the world have clear outlines.
Painting is a privilege. Painting is a duty. Painting is the best. Painting is looking near and far.”

When a volcano erupts, its center often ruptures and collapses. This bowl-shaped depression is a caldera.
Looking Back
Curating a solo exhibition reminded me that creating an experience doesn't always require many voices. Sometimes the a profound encounter comes from slowing down enough to enter one person's world fully.
It also reinforced something I have continued to trust in all my work: every meaningful creation has its own rhythm. Rather than imposing a concept onto Linda's paintings, my role was to recognise the atmosphere already living within the work and create the conditions for others to experience it.
Sometimes creative leadership is knowing when to guide. Sometimes it is knowing when to step back.
