What It Means to Be Human

What It Means to Be Human was created as a celebration of everything Marcy had become over the years: as a home gallery and a place where artists, collectors, neighbours, friends, and curious visitors came together through a shared love of art.
When I curated the first Marcy exhibition in 2018, I had never worked professionally with art.
What I had was a deep respect for artists, an intuition I trusted wholeheartedly, and a desire to create something that didn't yet exist.
That felt like enough.
Looking back now, I'm grateful that curiosity was stronger than my fear of getting it wrong.
Because everything that followed grew from that single decision to begin.
Bringing together twelve artists, What It Means to Be Human celebrated courageous expression, collaboration, beauty, and the many ways art helps us recognise ourselves in one another.
The exhibition embraced abundance.
Paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and works on paper came together like a spring salon layered, playful, thoughtful, and alive.
More than anything, the exhibition was a celebration of our shared humanity.
Stories worth telling, meaningful encounters and trusting our own path, even when we cannot yet see where it will lead.
I believe that is one of the most human things we can do: to create anyway.

Looking Back
This exhibition was a celebration of courage.
Years earlier, I had trusted an idea that made very little sense on paper: opening my own home to strangers and transforming it into a gallery.
I couldn't have predicted the artists I would meet, the friendships that would form, the conversations that would unfold, or the philosophy that would emerge through the process.
Meaningful work rarely begins with certainty: it begins with a willingness to take the first step before knowing exactly where it will lead.
Marcy taught me that courage is facing your fears so you can create from your truth; choosing to trust what feels true, even before anyone else can see it.
