Enigmatic

May 19 – June 5, 2022

Featuring work by Milja Havas, Lassi Kontiainen, Leena Kouhia & Réka Király, Nina Villanueva, Linda Linko, Jennifer Lipkin, and Sofia Okkonen.

Enigmatic began nearly six months before the exhibition opened, when I came across Lassi Kontiainen's work and immediately felt called to collaborate.

From there, the exhibition unfolded slowly.

One artist led to another.

One conversation opened the next.

One work suggested another.

The process was never linear.

But the feeling guiding it remained remarkably consistent.

I've often been asked how I choose the artists for Marcy.

The answer has always been surprisingly simple.

I trust my instincts.

And no, intuition does not give me all the answers.

But it helps me recognise something before I can fully explain it.

I tend to see exhibitions long before they exist.

Sometimes as a colour.

Sometimes as a mood.

Sometimes as an atmosphere that has not yet found its form.

The title Enigmatic emerged from that feeling.

Something expressive.

Bold.

Elusive.

A quality that resists immediate definition, yet asks us to stay with it.

I wasn't searching for artists who do similar kind of work: I was listening for resonance. Works that could enter into conversation with one another while each remaining completely themselves.

That's what intuition has always been for me: A way of listening before something has language.

Looking Back

Reading about this exhibition today, I recognise something that continues to shape every part of my work.

Intuition is not the opposite of discernment: it is one of its most beautiful expressions.

The more I have trusted my instincts, the more I have discovered that meaningful creation seldom begins with rational understanding.

It begins with recognising a feeling that asks to be followed…

Long before we have the language for it.
